The Speaker receives the new UN envoy to Iraq

The Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halboosi received, on Thursday, the new United Nations envoy to Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.

At the beginning of the meeting H.E. the Speaker congratulated Ms Plasschaert on the occasion of her new position in Iraq, wishing her success in her work.

The meeting discussed the importance of cooperation between Iraq and the UNAMI mission in all areas, especially in support of displaced persons, reconstruction and future UN programs in Iraq.

Al-Halboosi stressed the importance of continuing international support for Iraq, noting that the post-Da’ish phase and the great victories over terrorism require international efforts and continuous coordination in order to ensure the security and stability of all the cities of the country.

H.E. stressed the need for the international community to take its active and responsible role in helping displaced families and to create safe conditions for returning to their cities after the victory over terrorism and the transition to the stage of reconstruction of the country and investment and provision of services and employment opportunities.

For her part, Plasschaert confirmed the United Nations position in supporting the unity of Iraq and its federal democratic system and praised Iraq’s efforts in its fight against terrorism, adding that the international community is committed to providing adequate support to Iraq and at all levels.
