Al-Halboosi receives UN Special Representative for Iraq
The Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halboosi on Saturday, received the UN Special Representative for Iraq Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert to discuss the latest political and security developments and the demonstrations taking place in the country.
The meeting stressed the need to expedite the fulfillment of legitimate demands of citizens according to a specific time limit, improve public services, work to eliminate corruption and corrupted and take legal action against them, resolve this file, create an environment for growth and job creation.
The meeting also urged to maintain peaceful demonstrations, commitment to preserve public and private property, do not attack demonstrators and security forces and prevent saboteurs from creating a gap between them to create chaos that weakens the momentum of the right demands and the need to hold accountable the perpetrators of violence and enforce the law.
Ms. Hennis-Plasschaert expressed her deep concern about armed groups working to undermine stability in the country, which negatively affects the right to peaceful demonstration and fulfill the legitimate demands of demonstrators for change and the ability of the government to work to meet those demands, and she stressed that the Parliament should undertake its duties to fulfill the legitimate demands of the demonstrators and expressed the readiness of the United Nations to provide the necessary assistance in this context.
