Parliamentary Legal Committee continues discussing the IHEC Act

 

The Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halboosi on Wednesday, chaired an expanded meeting included his two deputies, heads of political blocs and the chairman and members of the Legal Committee in the Parliament, as part of a series of continuing meetings to discuss the law of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).

H.E. the Speaker said, “We must strengthen the confidence of the people in the governing institutions of the electoral process, which the Commission forms its basis,” pointing out that the House of Representatives is working on the procedures that put the Commission away of doubts and characterize it with impartiality and integrity and overcome all the loopholes and previous rebounds in its work.

The Speaker said that controls will be established to select the commissioners away of any political influence behind closed doors and the candidates will be selected with the participation of professional and popular organizations and civil society organizations, experts and academics and that the Parliament will give them confidence to exercise their official work.

The participants discussed all the legal and financial aspects of the Independent Electoral Commission, and reviewed the international experiences in this regard to reach an independent commission that is popularly accepted.
